MONROE, La. (AP) - Former East Carroll Sheriff Mark Shumate has entered a conditional guilty plea in federal court in Monroe to aiding and abetting a person convicted of a crime to possess a firearm.
The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1glwUQp) Shumate pleaded guilty before Magistrate Judge Karen Hayes. The plea is assumed conditional until signed by U.S. District Judge Robbie James.
Federal prosecutors say Shumate went hunting with a person he knew to be a convicted felon and that person is barred from possessing a firearm
The maximum penalty for violating the federal law is 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of $250,000.
Shumate was released on his own recognizance until sentencing on July 7.
Shumate, who was elected sheriff of East Carroll Parish in 2000, was defeated by Wydette Williams in 2012.
