Suspected Islamist militants shot dead a Yemeni man in the south of the country on Thursday, because they thought he was homosexual, police said.
One of two men on a motorbike opened fire at the man in his 20s outside his house in Huta, the capital of Lahij province, Agence France-Presse reported. The suspected gunmen were able to escape.
Police said this is the sixth such murder since the start of the year. Similar killings in the nation’s provinces of Abyan and Aden have been blamed on an al-Qaeda-affiliated group, Ansar al-Sharia, AFP said.
The group has imposed Islamic law on areas of Abyan where it has held sway for the past year, the report said.
