Police in southern France were in for a shock Friday night when they responded to reports of blood-curdling screams coming from a church and found out that an exorcism was being performed.

According to L’Independant, authorities arrived at the evangelical church in Limoux in the midst of the ritual and watched as a pastor proceeded “to expel a ’demon’ from a member of the congregation,” the Huffington Post reported.

Pastor Régis Berdeilh reported that he was successful in ridding the churchgoer of demonic possession.

No arrests were made.

According to the Post report, these rituals are not uncommon in Europe. Last year, the Catholic diocese of Milan doubled the number of priests who are trained to perform exorcisms.
