House Speaker John A. Boehner will ask his fellow Republicans at a Thursday morning meeting to approve a short-term debt increase, the Associated Press reported — a move that would give them time to negotiate a broader deal.

President Obama floated the idea of a short-term increase earlier this week, saying he would be willing to sit down and talk about bigger issues once the immediate threat of hitting the debt limit is overcome.

Mr. Boehner was slated to meet with the House Republican Conference on Thursday morning and to speak with reporters afterward.

Later in the day Republican leaders are scheduled to meet at the White House with Mr. Obama.
