A northeast Georgia school district is considering a plan that would allow schools to store Colt 6920 M4 carbine rifles in safes to help defend against a potential attack.
One rifle for each Gainesville city school would be locked in the vehicles of school resource officers when the schools aren’t in session, The Associated Press reported. The cost to each school would be around $6,000.
The safes would be accessible by fingerprint recognition, and only the school’s resource officer would have access, The Times of Gainesville reported.
Gainesville police proposed the plan in April after 26 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last year.
The plan still needs approval by the school board, AP said.
