Florida Rep. Henry “Trey” Radel was arrested last month on misdemeanor possession of cocaine charges in Washington, D.C., a U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesman said.
“I’m profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida,” the freshman Republican said in a statement. “I struggle with the disease of alcoholism, and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. As the father of a young son and a husband to a loving wife, I need to get help so I can be a better man for both of them.
“In facing this charge, I realize the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel. Believe me, I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions,” he continued.
Court records indicate that Mr. Radel, 37, is due back in court on Wednesday for his arrest on Oct. 29. He faces 180 days in prison and a $1,000 if convicted, WJLA-TV reported.
The Republican was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and represents the cities of Fort Myers, Naples and Cape Coral in southwest Florida.
