Highland Park, Mich., Mayor Deandre Windom was shot Sunday morning at a nightclub in Detroit, local media reported.

Mr. Windom, an innocent bystander, was shot in the leg in the Key Club in the 1400 block of Franklin Street, Detroit police spokeswoman Kelly Miner said, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“The Highland Park mayor was in the location when a dispute took place unrelated to the mayor,” she said. “The dispute escalated into the shooting.”

Mr. Windom was taken to the hospital and listed in temporary serious condition, police said. He is in stable condition, CBS Detroit reported.

“No other person hurt or arrested — it just seemed like he was not involved in it, that’s what I’ve been told by detectives that are working this case,” the spokeswoman said.

A 25-year-old Eastpointe, Mich., man is in custody, the Free Press reported.
