A 17-year-old Washington-Lee High School student was charged with reckless driving Tuesday in relation to a skateboarding accident that left his friend and fellow student dead, Arlington County police said.
The teenager, who was not identified because he is a minor, was driving a car in the 300 block of S. Highland Street on June 4 while his friend, 18-year-old John Malvar, held on to the driver’s side window and riding a skateboard.
Malvar lost his balance and fell off his skateboard, hitting his head on the road. Malvar, also a Washington-Lee High School student, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
The 17-year-old driver was released to the custody of his parents. His trial has been scheduled for Aug. 8.
