The Venezuela congress, in an attempt to improve children’s health, will discuss legislation this week that would ban bottle-feeding, Reuters reported Friday.
Odalis Monzon, from Venezuela’s ruling Socialist party, said the proposal would “prohibit all types of baby bottles” as a way to “increase the love (between mother and child), because this has been lost as a result of these transnational companies selling formula.”
The legislation provides exceptions where formula can be used in the case of the death of a mother, for instance, Ms. Monzon added.
The measure likely will gain criticism from opposition sympathizers who say the government of the late President Hugo Chavez trampled on individual freedoms, Reuters reported.
