Whole Foods recalls cheese because of listeria outbreak

Whole Foods is recalling Crave Brothers Les Freres cheese after people in several states reported severe illnesses and one person died from listeria.

The cheese was sold in 30 states and the District of Columbia and may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the Associated Press reported.

Public health officials in Illinois said Wednesday that one resident became sick after eating contaminated cheese in May, the AP said.

Minnesota officials said Thursday that one elderly person in the state died and another was hospitalized after illnesses linked to the cheese, the AP reported.

Listeria can cause symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Crave Brothers, based in Waterloo, Wis., announced a voluntary recall of Les Freres, Petit Frere, and Petit Frere with truffles cheese made on July 1 or earlier, the AP reported.
