A 2-year-old girl is recovering at home after she was bitten and dragged by a coyote at a Cypress, Calif., cemetery.
The toddler, Klarissa Barrera, of Long Beach, was visiting the cemetery with family at Forest Lawn Memorial Park when a coyote bit her on the back and tried to drag her into the bushes, NBC 4 reported Tuesday.
Barrera’s mother, Michelle Luper, said she screamed and lunged at the coyote when it let go. The girl was treated for rabies and a 2.5-inch gash on her leg, the report said.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials later shot and killed three coyotes at the cemetery, the Orange County Register reported.
Experts say coyote attacks on people are rare and this was the first reported in Orange County this year.
