A mother and father were arrested in California Sunday night after police found their children locked in the trunk of a car they were driving drunk in, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Worried witnesses had reported seeing a child in the trunk of a black Cadillac at the drive-thru of a Bakers Restaurant, NBC 4 reported.

Officials said the mother April Burgo, 32, who was driving the Cadillac at the time, was reluctant to open the trunk when deputies asked her.

“A strong odor of [alcoholic] beverage emitted from the inside of the vehicle,” a news release said, according to the station.

The children’s father, Richard Burgo, 29, was sitting in the back seat.

When officials opened the trunk, a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were found inside crying.

The Burgos were arrested on suspicion of cruelty to a child. Brandon Rampani, 33, of Escondido, was also traveling in the car and arrested, NBC 4 reported.

The three suspects posted bail. The children were uninjured and are under the care of a relative, the station said.
