A camel presented to French president Francois Hollande as a “sign of gratitude” in Mali has reportedly been eaten by locals.
The foster family responsible for taking care of the animal for Mr. Hollande has apparently slaughtered it for a stew, the London Times reports.
Mali had presented the camel to the Socialist president in February for leading a military campaign to liberate Timbuktu from the stranglehold of Islamist rule, the International Business Times reports.
French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian revealed the fate of the camel to media Tuesday, just days after Hollande joked he was going to use it for official transport.
