Rutgers University owes a basketball coach $100,000 bonus for lasting through the season, even though he was fired Wednesday for verbally and physically abusing players.

Mike Rice was dismissed after a video was made public, showing the coach pushing, shoving and shouting gay slurs at the players during practices.

The Associated Press reports that the coach would not be collecting the bonus if he had been fired when the university first saw the video in December. Back then, the administration had decided only to discipline him.

Mr. Rice was paid $622,500 last year in a contract that included bonuses for winning games and graduating players. His five-year contract called for a $100,000 bonus if he completed the 2012-13 season, the AP reported.
