Three years after banning the practice, the Marion County school board in central Florida voted Tuesday to resume paddling its misbehaving elementary school students.
The Ocala Star-Banner reports that paddling can only be used in elementary schools if the parent or guardian gives a written approval every year.
The principal must also receive verbal permission from a parent before paddling the child, and a student can be paddled only once in a semester, the paper reports.
Marion County was one of the largest districts in Florida that still used corporal punishment before it was banned in 2010.
Board member Carol Ely, a retired principal, made the motion to reinstate the practice, saying it’s a good option for discipline, Fox News reports.
