OPINION:
Our Lady of Sorrows High School in Phoenix is a traditional Catholic school. Its recent decision to forfeit its championship baseball final is pursuant to school policy, which rules out participation in co-ed sports.
This policy is consistent with the traditional approach to education, which promotes the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education. The school’s aim is to instill in their boys a profound respect for women and girls.
While some see this practice as outdated, the co-ed approach, which was introduced in the 1960s, has led to a sexually permissive society. In the past few decades we have seen a lowering of moral standards, a steep rise in infidelity and promiscuity, and a lessening of respect for women. Women are no longer beloved and respected individuals, but have instead become objects of pleasure.
No doubt we can all learn a thing or two from the traditional approach to morality and education.
