D.C. police believe three people are responsible for a gang-related shooting on July 4 that killed a 19-year-old man and injured three others in Northwest, according to a police affidavit filed in the case.

Calvin Shaw, 22, was charged with first-degree murder in Wednesday’s shooting of 19-year-old Crevontai Key and ordered held without bond Monday in D.C. Superior Court.

Charging documents filed in the case Monday describe how three men came out of an alley and approached another group of people in the 5000 block of First Street in Northwest before opening fire.

As the men approached, a witness reported hearing someone say, “That’s them KDY youngins,” referring to the neighborhood gang KDY that is known to hang out in the area of 7th and Kennedy streets in Northwest. One witness, who did not know the person who shot him, later picked out Mr. Shaw as a shooter from a photo line-up.

Mr. Shaw is also referred to by the aliases Sharkim Sharp and “Shocka” in the charging documents.

Metropolitan Police Department officials recovered 27 shell casings from three different guns at the scene of the shooting, the police affidavit states. As of Monday, one of the three people who survived the shooting remains hospitalized. The other two victims have been released from the hospital.

In December, three KDY gang members were convicted of charges related to a drive-by shooting near Sherman Circle in Northwest.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Mr. Shaw on July 19. A public defender listed as representing him in the case could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
