MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A car-bomb attack killed eight people and wounded two members of parliament Wednesday in the capital, Somali officials said.

Police Cmdr. Ahmed Hassan Maalin said an explosives-laden car parked near a hotel in Mogadishu exploded Wednesday evening. Mohamud Abdullahi Wehelie, a Somali parliamentarian, said eight people were killed and 11 were seriously injured. Parliamentary member Dahir Iro said two parliamentary members were among those wounded.

Mr. Wehelie called the explosion a “cowardly and heartless attack.” He blamed the blast on the Somali militant group al-Shabab.

African Union troops largely have pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu, but the militants continue to carry out roadside and suicide bombings in the capital.
