It bothers me that in a time of sorrow, many only want to focus on the very dark side of Whitney Houston’s short life (“Whitney Houston’s squandered gift,” Commentary, Tuesday).

Yes, over the years, we all have seen the Diane Sawyer and Oprah Winfrey interviews in which Miss Houston admitted to using illegal drugs. But at a time when the country is grieving the loss of a truly talented superstar, it offends me to hear so much reporting on her salacious past.

Americans loved Whitney Houston. Dwelling on her drug use will not change how I and millions of other fans will always feel about her as a tremendous vocal artist.
