A D.C. high school student was shot during a Tuesday morning robbery in Southeast while on her way to school, according to police and school officials.

A man stole the woman’s backpack and shot her in the leg, a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman said.

The shooting happened around 8:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of Morris Road Southeast in Anacostia. The student was on her way to Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School, a magnet school located in Northeast about four miles from the site of the shooting.

The student, who police described as an adult, was conscious and breathing when taken to a hospital. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The shooter has not been arrested but was described as a man wearing a red jacket and a black face mask, a police spokesman said.
