A Greenbelt man’s death last month in the hours after he was involved in a fight is now being investigated as a homicide, Prince George’s County police said Thursday.

Police said two men are in custody in the death of Aiah Nyanga Tongu.

Tongu, 34, went to the hospital the morning of March 18 to seek help when he started having trouble breathing. Earlier in the night, he was involved in a fight in the 9700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Lanham, police spokesman Cpl. Clinton Copeland said. He died later that day.

Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Tongu’s death a homicide on Wednesday. Police did not provide information on the cause of his death.

Maryland court records show that Teddy Kaikai Marchant, 26, and Alhaji Abu Bakarr, 36, were arrested in the following days and charged with assault. Neither had been charged with murder as of Wednesday.

Mr. Marchant, of the 5500 block of Decatur Street in Bladensburg, and Mr. Bakarr, of the 1400 block of Tongue Street in Bowie, are being held without bond in the case.
