The American Jobs Act is nothing more than the president’s divide-and-conquer strategy for getting re-elected (” ’American Con Job Act,’ ” Commentary, Sept. 16). Why else would he offer up a bill he knew perfectly well had no chance of passing Congress? He wouldn’t have done so unless he had needed a rallying cry for his troops.

For a moment, let’s suppose Congress passed the legislation. First, the country would come to realize how superficial the bill was. More importantly, though, this would be devastating to the president, as he would no longer have a campaign issue and would have to run on his abysmal record. In other words, not only does the president know the act wouldn’t pass, he certainly doesn’t want to see it pass. It is all a charade.

The scary part, however, is that he is sharply dividing the republic between the haves and the have-nots. And frankly, it doesn’t seem to bother him.
