OPINION:
Thank you for publishing the opinion column “Ending hypocrisy of terrorist designation” (Commentary, Oct. 14) by Gen. Hugh Shelton. The column defended Iran’s main democratic opposition group, the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), which is designated as a terrorist group in the United States.
This designation is illegal and immoral. No terrorist group would have the support of so many American members of Congress as well as a general of the American armed forces. The recent Arab Spring has created a unique opportunity for change in the Middle East and one that we in the West must not ignore. In the past, many Western countries have supported different dictators and different regimes for their own self-interest. Now, the region’s desire for freedom and our desire to change undemocratic and brutal regimes are aligned. Rarely do these two points meet - and this opening must not be missed.
