OPINION:
It is a tragedy that nearly 50 exotic animals were killed in Zanesville, Ohio, Tuesday, including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions, after a troubled exotic animal farm owner released them before committing suicide (“Owner of exotic animals deep in debt,” Web, Thursday).
It is unfortunate a tranquilizer gun couldn’t have been used on those animals, rather than high-powered rifles. This shows the need not to allow people to house wild animals like this and only to allow the animals in zoos, as most people can’t adequately care for exotic animals.
Ohio has some of the weakest restrictions on exotic pets in the nation, which, as this tragedy shows leads to disaster.
