President Obama and the leftist Democrats in Congress are going after oil company profits (“Senate Dems: Big Oil doesn’t need tax breaks,” Web, Thursday). If successful, it will be a tax increase for every American.

Why? Because taking money from oil companies will lead to even higher prices at the gas pump, which will eventually result in higher prices for everything. When government actions hit the pocketbooks of Americans, it is the same thing as a tax increase. Aren’t businesses supposed to make profits? Where’s the crime here? Why should oil companies be treated any differently than other businesses that claim deductions available to them in the tax code?

I’m tired of radical Democrats punishing private enterprise; it’s authoritarian Marxism and it’s anti-American. They take and only give back when it’s politically expedient - for example, the waiver of Obamacare for McDonald’s. It’s certainly not economic freedom, which is the basis of America’s success and prosperity to date. Where do these people and their toxic ideas come from?

The real causes of the high gas prices we have now are the government’s printing of dollars and out-of-control federal government spending.
