While suburban developments often feature quiet cul-de-sac locations that reduce traffic and allow for each home to rest on a more secluded site, city streets rarely offer that luxury. The home at 5077 Lowell St. in the Kent neighborhood of Northwest Washington rests on one of the few cul-de-sacs in the city.

This recently renovated Colonial-style home, on the market for $2,750,000, rests on a site of approximately 0.37 acres in a parklike setting. The grounds include more than 4,000 square feet of terraces constructed of Pennsylvania blue slate with complementary expanses of stone walls and slate walkways linking the front and rear gardens.

A heated, negative-edge swimming pool includes a built-in whirlpool tub and a catch pool with equipment that can be remotely controlled from within the house. The pool-level terrace is cooled by a sprinkler system and has hidden speakers in the planters. Another terrace includes an outdoor fireplace and an outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and barbecue, with a storage shed around the corner of the house.

The property has a 12-zone sprinkler system and professionally landscaped gardens with outdoor lighting on the ground and in the trees.

This home, built in 1939, has been designed and renovated for entertaining lavishly, with built-in speakers on the two lower levels, three zones of music indoors and two zones outdoors, two iPod docking stations, a digital music server for a CD collection and satellite radio service.

The main level features random-width hardwood flooring and recessed lighting. A columned portico entrance leads to the foyer, which has stone tile flooring, a hanging lantern, crown molding, two coat closets and a powder room. The adjacent formal living room has a gas fireplace and a doorway to the library, which has three walls of built-in bookcases.

The library opens into the generously proportioned family room, which has 10-foot ceilings, walls of windows with transoms and a glass door to the terrace. This room includes a wood-burning fireplace with a stone hearth and surround, along with a built-in and hidden plasma flat-screen television above the fireplace, surround sound and in-ceiling speakers.

The formal dining room, which is accessible from the foyer, the library, a butler’s pantry and through a swinging door from the kitchen, features floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass door and French doors to the terrace.

The kitchen and adjacent breakfast area have crown molding, plantation shutters, custom-designed cabinets and a gas fireplace with a stone hearth and surround, plus a built-in television cabinet. A honed granite counter with a peninsula is complemented by top-of-the-line appliances, including a six-burner gas range and two dishwashers.

Upstairs, the master suite has hardwood flooring, recessed lighting, windows on two sides, and a walk-in closet with extensive built-ins and a dressing area. Frosted-glass French doors link the bedroom with the luxurious bath, which has separate vanities, a travertine floor and an oversized dual-head shower and steam system.

The second bedroom has hardwood flooring, a ceiling fan, a built-in bookcase, a built-in corner hutch and a walk-in closet with built-in drawers and shelves. The third bedroom has hardwood flooring, a ceiling fan and a double-door closet. These two bedrooms share a full bath off the hall. This level also has a linen closet and a walk-in storage closet.

The finished attic level has a bedroom with windows on two sides, antique pine flooring, a separate sitting room, a full bath with ceramic tile flooring and a walk-in closet. Additional attic storage can be accessed from the walk-in closet.

The lower level features a media room with heated hardwood flooring, wall sconces, a media closet, built-in speakers and a projector with a screen. Adjacent to the media room is a game room with heated hardwood flooring and French doors to the terrace and pool area.

A home office or fifth bedroom is located off the media room and includes stone tile flooring, recessed lighting, a gas fireplace, three walls of built-in shelving and a built-in desk, two double-door closets, and a full bath with tile flooring. A pool bath with a shower and stone tile flooring, and a laundry room with extra counters and cabinets are also on this level.

The lower level has several storage and utility rooms, including a pantry with built-in cabinets and counter space, and a storage room with a wine cabinet. This home also has a security system and three zones of gas heat and central air conditioning.
