The picture accompanying the story “Obama low-key during P.R. visit,” (Politics, Wednesday) shows that the Puerto Rican authorities are either sorely lacking in knowledge of flag etiquette or intentionally elevated the importance of the Puerto Rican flag over the U.S. flag.

In the photo, the Puerto Rican flag is on the right-hand side of the president. The American flag should always be on the right-hand side of the speaker as the speaker faces the audience. It stretches credulity to believe the authorities were unaware of this etiquette, but I wonder if the White House advance party even noticed.
