RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court in Virginia will consider a University of North Carolina at Wilmington associate professor’s claim that he was denied a promotion because of his conservative Christian views.
A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Michael Adams’ case Wednesday.
Adams claims he was denied a promotion to full professor of criminology because of political and religious views he expressed in books and columns. University officials say the decision was based on Adams’ performance, not his views.
U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard ruled in favor of the university, and Adams appealed.
