JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Experts say the fight against AIDS is weakened when resources are misspent, policy makers ignore science, and prejudice keeps those most vulnerable from seeking help.

The failings are particularly worrying at a time when worldwide recession and donor fatigue are hitting spending, the researchers say in a new book.

The book was the focus of a discussion Thursday at the offices of an independent development foundation set up by Nelson Mandela.

Since serving as South Africa’s first black president, the anti-apartheid icon has campaigned to raise awareness about AIDS in the country with the world’s largest AIDS burden.

The two dozen authors of the new book include Nelson Mandela Foundation chief Achmat Dangor.
