EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) — Mike Shanahan is hoping for the best and preparing for the worst as the the NFL and the players’ union continue to negotiate a new labor deal. The Washington Redskins coach discussed the NFL’s labor situation Thursday night before the Eastern Illinois Athletic Director’s Gala, where he was the guest of honor. Shanahan is approaching the season as if it’s going to be “business as usual,” saying that it will be like a normal year if the league and players’ union reach a deal by the March 3 deadline. If not, Shanahan says “you’ve got to be ready for plan two, three or four.” Shanahan graduated from EIU in 1974 and was the Panther’s offensive coordinator in 1978.
