OPINION:
The recent news story “Gingrich takes fire from rivals in debate” (Web, Thursday) says the former speaker of the House is in favor of abolishing activist federal courts. I disagree with Mr. Gingrich.
Instead, we should pass a constitutional amendment removing the lifetime appointment to the federal bench and mandate that all federal judges be renominated every seven years in order to answer to the American people on how their rulings have comported with the Constitution. This is a nonpartisan and apolitical approach.
The concept of the Founders to make the federal judiciary beyond the scope of politics with lifetime appointments has had unintended consequences, chief among them a judiciary that is answerable to no one when legislating from the bench.
