A white “9-11-01” will be painted next to the court for the U.S. Open men’s and women’s singles finals, part of the Grand Slam tennis tournament’s commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The men’s final in New York is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11. The women’s final is a day earlier.

Jon Vegosen, the U.S. Tennis Association’s chairman of the board and president, says in a telephone interview Thursday the “goal is to mark this very solemn occasion in a dignified and respectful manner.”

He says painting the date beside the net will “trigger memories for each of us.”

Other plans include the unfurling of a giant U.S. flag by Marines, and having the men’s finalists walk on court through a path lined by New York police officers and firefighters.
