SURRY, Va. (AP) Dominion Virginia Power’s Surry nuclear power plant could be out of service for several days while workers repair its tornado-damaged electrical switchyard.
Surry Power Station’s reactors automatically shut down Saturday night when a tornado touched down in the station’s switchyard. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the damage interrupted the station’s connections to off-site power from the electrical grid.
The tornado didn’t directly strike the two nuclear units.
The NRC says it discontinued monitoring Tuesday. A review of the incident continues.
Dominion didn’t provide a cost estimate for repairing the damage at the station about 50 miles southeast of Richmond.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that one unit already had been scheduled to shut down Saturday for a regular refueling outage. The other will come back online when switchyard repairs are completed.
