OPINION:
Now that Gen. McCrystal has been dismissed, the general should feel relieved (“McChrystal resigns Afghan command,” Page 1, Thursday). Certainly he will no longer have to deal with a politicized White House with no foreign policy experience. The divergent and constantly changing views of an executive office that believes in coddling our enemies while insulting our friends surely must discourage any military person leading nearly 100,000 of our soldiers in a battle, where they are alternately told that they could win or is hopeless.
Gen. McCrystal should be congratulated for his military prowess. I hope his dismissal comes with an honorable discharge and not with a court-martial for insubordination. He has earned a peaceful and honorable retirement away from a situation where his contributions were never appreciated.
