CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — A shift in federal sex-education funding is pushing the Cumberland YMCA away from the abstinence-only approach it has taught for three years in Allegany County Public Schools.
The Obama administration has redirected more than $100 million toward programs it says are proven to reduce teen pregnancy.
As a result, the Cumberland YMCA has lost grant funding for an eight-week program it has been teaching to sixth- and eighth-graders.
The program’s director told local YMCA supporters Tuesday that she is seeking federal funds for a new course that doesn’t stress abstinence — and doesn’t even focus on sex.
She says the new course encourages adolescents to explore their interests, envision themselves in careers and role-play to learn planning and decision-making skills.
