HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a chemical in a man’s car set off an explosion at an apartment complex parking garage.

Prince George’s County fire department spokesman Maj. Tyrone Forby says a man who works in the heating and air-conditioning field had a leaking acetylene tank in his car. Maj. Forby said the man smelled the gas and tried to air out the car. Maj. Forby says the man started his vehicle, and as he pushed the controls to lower the windows, the explosion occurred.

He says the man panicked and ran away. Authorities identified him through surveillance footage. Maj. Forby says the man suffered minor injuries.

Local and federal authorities spent hours investigating what they initially described as a suspicious scene. Maj. Forby says the man does not face charges.
