OPINION:
I read with horror the statement by Tracy Schmaler, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. (“Justice: Sanctuary cities safe from law,” Page 1, Thursday). The statement that there is a big difference between refusing to enforce a federal law and actively interfering with one is both misleading and incorrect. The Arizona law instructs law enforcement officials to enforce the federal immigration laws, whereas leaders of so-called sanctuary cities instruct officials to ignore formal federal laws.
The suggestion that laws are there to be obeyed if one agrees with them but may be ignored if considered unfair leads to anarchy. The fact that a spokesman for the attorney general can make such a suggestion indicates that the leader of the Justice Department no longer has any respect for the law. The department henceforth should be named the Department of Injustice until Mr. Holder and his appointees have been dismissed.
