WASHINGTON (AP) — “A Masked Ball” will take over Nationals Park next month as the Washington National Opera broadcasts Verdi’s opera live in the ballpark. As many as 20,000 people will be able to see it for free on the ballpark’s high definition scoreboard. Plans for the Sept. 19 event were announced Monday. “A Masked Ball” is a dramatic story based on the real-life murder of a Swedish king in the 18th century. It will be broadcast from the Kennedy Center. Activities before the show will feature mask-making and costumes for children. Opera simulcasts have become increasingly popular. Last year, more than 19,000 people saw “The Barber of Seville.” In 2008, the opera “La Traviata” drew about 15,000 people.
