VACCINE HEALTH: A healthcare market research firm says vaccines are one of the healthiest segments of the pharmaceutical business, with global sales growing 16 percent in 2009, to $22.1 billion.

FUTURE GROWTH: Kalorama Information is forecasting vaccine sales will rise at a compound annual rate of nearly 10 percent during the next five years. That would push sales to roughly $35 billion, nearly double the 2008 level.

SALES DRIVERS: Companies are developing new vaccines and working to increase use of current ones, both in developed and emerging markets. Kids’ shots are leading the way.
