They came, they saw, they donated. The Little Sisters of the Poor, a religious order that provides a home in Northeast Washington for more than 100 of the elderly poor, joined other benefactors Monday for a successful Trash to Treasure tag sale.
Material and monetary gifts were donated by the Association Jeanne Jugan, named for the founder of the order, as well as friends, relatives and the staff of the home.
The event was more than a fundraiser. It was a “friend-raiser,” as one donor put it. It enabled the public at large, many of whom were not familiar with the works of the Little Sisters, to meet and interact with the elderly residents in a friendly and fun environment, which was complemented by Father Charles Knoll at the piano.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the residents of the home and also defray the expenses of a few Little Sisters and residents who are going to Rome to witness Pope Benedict XVI’s Oct. 11 canonization of Jeanne Jugan. As a majority of the residents are unable to attend that special event, they will be treated to gifts and mementos from the ceremony.
