Model schools for the nation
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Tuesday that 314 schools, the majority public schools, have been named as 2009 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Mr. Duncan, who made the announcement at Highland Elementary School in Silver Spring, said all the winning schools proved that “with appropriate supports,” all children can learn.
The annual Blue Ribbon program honors pubic and private schools whose students achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests or, in the case of private schools, in the top 10 percent of the nation on nationally normed tests. In addition, at least 40 percent of a school’s students must be from a disadvantaged background and demonstrate dramatic improvement, and the school must meet federally mandated Adequate Yearly Progress in reading and math.
Winning schools will be feted at a ceremony in Washington at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, where they will receive a plaque and flag signifying their status.
