Gift-giving can be tough on the wallet under normal circumstances. During a year like this? Almost impossible.

So, how to make the most with a lot less?

Well, if you listen to Ramit Sethi, author of “I Will Teach You to Be Rich,” it shouldn’t be much of a problem. Focus on giving each other rich experiences and togetherness as gifts instead of things.

Specifically, cook together, go to the park or go to a local attraction instead of spending $400 (the average amount Americans will spend this year, according to Mr. Sethi) on Christmas gifts.
