“This project is embarrassing to come up at a time like this… to pay for upgrades to luxury boxes, the construction of a Hard Rock Cafe and a Yankee Steakhouse?” - Joan Byron of the Pratt Center for Community Development at a hearing to discuss additional tax-free bonds to help fund the New York Yankees’ new ballpark

AFC championship game
It’s Ravens-Steelers for the third time this season in a game that probably will feature more teeth-clenching injuries than touchdowns. The key could be Pittsburgh’s Willie Parker, who was a nonfactor earlier this year but has averaged 131 yards in his past two games.
NFC championship game
Eagles-Cardinals? No one saw this matchup coming. Both teams have the potential to score a lot of points but have been playing their best football lately because of aggressive and opportunistic defense.
Georgetown at Duke
Beating the Blue Devils would give the Hoyas one of their best nonconference regular-season wins in a long time — and likely would put them squarely back in the top 10.
Wake Forest at Clemson

Baseball commissioner Cadillac Bud Selig has given the Oakland Athletics permission to talk about a new ballpark with other communities if elected officials in Fremont, a suburb near Oakland, won’t give the OK for a new ballpark there.
The dispute in Oakland has to make you consider what would have happened if the whole Nationals Park funding battle in the District would have come along several years later in this climate. Baseball was fortunate to get the deal done when it did, or else the Washington Nationals would be stuck playing in RFK Stadium for years to come. There would be no Northern Virginia or anywhere else to turn to for a new ballpark.
