I enjoyed Wesley Pruden’s Tuesday column (“A flirtation with Chicken Little,” Pruden on Politics, Nation) but I have a nit to pick. Though no sane person denies the lefty looniness of Portland, Ore., and San Francisco, please be aware that Ithaca, N.Y., is the “most enlightened” city in the country.

The Utne Reader said so, and no one can doubt that to people like those at the Utne Reader, the word “enlightened” is interchangeable with “lefty.” Take a look at the voting numbers of recent elections, and you will understand my position more fully. Ralph Nader outdrew President Bush here.
