Wasatch Mountains, Utah – Mountain Goats - Utah has an outstanding population of mountain goats. Hunts start in mid September and last through the first week of October, or until the snow flies, making it impossible to reach the high country where these goats are found. Mountain goat hunts are extremely strenuous and require steep mountain hiking. Non-residents must apply for the Wasatch Mountains Lone Peak area, where canyons are also very popular with the non-hunting population. All hunting is done on foot. Mount Timpanogos is true mountain goat country. In some areas, hunts will be at elevations from 10,000 to over 13,000 feet in very steep terrain. Hunters need to come up with a plan to recover the goat before taking a shot.
