A native of Lodz, Poland, Klitzki wrote and conducted in Berlin before leaving Germany in the 1930s to escape the Nazis. One of his pieces from the early 1930s, a piano concerto, has been revived by the project at the University of North Texas, and a performance of the work will be in the running for a Grammy award this Sunday. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
