Police keep watch over the the Christopher Columbus statue in Philadelphia, Oct. 7, 2022. The statue remains hidden by a plywood box while its fate is decided in the courts, but the box has now been painted with the colors of the Italian flag. KYW reports that city officials told the station that they painted the box covering the 146-year-old statue in south Philadelphia’s Marconi Plaza with the green, white and red stripes at the request of Councilman Mark Squilla, who represents the district. The new look came just in time for the holiday formerly named for the explorer and now celebrated in the city as Indigenous Peoples Day. (Charles Fox/The Philadelphia Inquirer via AP)
