When flights were canceled and airports shut down, cafe owner Darshana Ratnayake decided to organize free food and shelter for several dozen stranded tourists. “We were totally blown away,” one of the tourists, 31-year-old cruise line entertainment director Alex Degmetich, said of the gesture. 40 tourists were stranded in Ella after the Sri Lankan government imposed a nationwide curfew on March 20 to curb the spread of the virus, sealing off entire regions of the Indian Ocean island nation. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
