A new movie about Thurgood Marshall focuses on a rape case he worked on, well before he won a landmark school desegregation case and a quarter-century before he became a Supreme Court justice. In early 1941, Marshall was in Bridgeport, Conn., to represent Joseph Spell, a black chauffeur accused by his wealthy, white employer of rape. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
