Researchers from the United States Geological Survey check the levels of lamprey pheromone in traps being used as a part of a study on the Grand River on Monday, May 7, 2018. The study being conducted will provide estimates of the lamprey population in the Grand River and be a deciding factor in whether a "lampricide", the killing of lampreys, must be done. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to find out how many sea lampreys are in the Detroit River and other area waterways. A crew is expected to do an assessment from May 29 to June 7 that will help determine the need for measures to control the eel-like parasites, which attack fish such as trout, salmon and whitefish. Hegseth joins veterans, generals to mark 80th anniversary of battle of Iwo Jima
A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
